Jazmine Sullivan was born and lived at home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her mother Pam has been a previous vocalist for the backup band of Philadelphia International Records. At the age of five, young, her father got an appointment as the curator at the city's Historic Strawberry Mansion in the Strawberry Mansion section, and her family relocated to the historical landmark. She graduated in 2005 of Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts where she was an instructor of vocal music. Sullivan played the contralto in the choir of children, then just a few years later she joined in the adult choir. Sullivan was not exposed to secular music. She recalls when she was just 11 years old when a person asked her to sing solos at the church. But, she wasn't fully ready. Then, McDonald's held a contest that was open to children living in cities. I was selected to perform "Accept What God Allows" during the show Showtime At the Apollo. And the people were very enthusiastic. Stevie Wonder sang her part during his 13th birthday celebration. Sullivan had signed her first contract with Jive Records when she was 15. When she was 15 the label signed her to Jive Records. The label recorded the entire album however it was never made available for release. Sullivan was then dropped out of the company. Missy Elliott was her producer for several tracks on Her debut album. One of them was "Backstabbers", a buzz track written by Timbaland, was written by Elliott.
